How do we make an impact in a world that feels very big?
As humans, I think we can all agree that we have many differences, and we are all very unique etc etc bla bla bla you know the drill.
But ultimately we all share one key thing in common; we'd all like to make some sort of positive change in the world.
This is of course easier said than done. The world is a huge place; it's so easy to feel like you're a tiny drop in the ocean who has little influence over the tides or currents - i.e. the big, physical changes that we can physically see.
Additionally, in this social media age that we live in, it's even tougher than ever to 'stand out'. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have millions of users; you can end up feeling like a very small fish in a very big pond.
Even if you are a big influencer with 100k+ followers on Instagram, you're still part of a pool of other influencers who have similar stats and profiles.
So how can you truly make a difference in the world without being Beyoncé or the Queen?
Well, I think I've found the secret. Anyone in the world is capable of doing it, and it won't cost you a penny.
And the secret is....
Be yourself.
I know this sounds stupid, cliche and patronising... but stay with me...
Every moment of every day, you influence a far greater number of people in the world than you could ever imagine.
If you look left instead of right, and catch that stranger's eye, you'll probably think nothing of it. (On this occasion anyway)
However, they've been admiring your cream trench coat since you stepped foot on the tube, wondering about the story behind the coat... Did you buy it? Were you given it? Maybe they will now go home and Google, 'long cream trench coat', and maybe they will buy one. From this, the clothes company will get money, which will help the employees in that company - maybe your sale just pushed the company over their annual targets, causing all employees to receive bonus. Then the company will dispatch the coat via a courier. The courier will deliver your parcel to your house - perhaps an area they've never visited. They might spend their such break at the café down your road. It's a busy cafe so they ask someone already seated if they can share their table for a bit. They get chatting, fall in love and the rest is history...
If you hadn't worn your coat that day, the courier driver wouldn't have met the love of their life...
So you see, in that simple moment, you've changed the world a bit. Or at the very least changed that particular person's world a little bit.
Life is just one big chain reaction, and we are constantly causing miniature changes to ourselves and those around us simply by making seemingly mundane everyday decisions.
It's difficult because we rarely actually ever see the drastic changes we make to people's lives. It's why it's so important to always be kind and understanding to others; you never know what someone is going through, and how much you can change their day, their week, or their life.
As well as changing other people's worlds, your own is constantly being shaped by the people and environment that surrounds you. You could be influenced by something you see on TV, or a song played on the radio could completely change your mood.
And just like that, you've changed the world again! Your world this time.
However, I recognise, that despite this, it's still easy to feel powerless in comparison to the role models with millions of fans and followers, that sparkle in the media spotlight; how can you make as effective a change as a popstar or politician can? (Sorry to all the popstars reading this just bear with...)
Well, the problem with that thought is the concept of comparison, rather than the concept of feeling powerless. We've already discovered that we are actually far more powerful than we think we are, but this becomes empowering when you rid yourself of comparison.
We're all going to change the world in different capacities. The best way to reach our full capacity is to focus on ours and ours alone.
If you strip absolutely everything back, you can imagine that every volume of change becomes equal. Every single choice, thought and action in the world is completely necessary and completely significant.
And although it may be hard to imagine...
The world would be an entirely different place without you.
We are all little shapers and shapees, learning from the things that surround and pass us everyday and in return we teach the rest of the world a few things too.
You are the change in this world - regardless of whether you can see it or not.
So embrace your youness, and continue to find yourself and embrace the things that make you, you.
The only thing that is completely consistent in this world is that everything is always changing, transitioning, and evolving.
So what's the best way to make an impact in a world that feels very big? Well, you literally don't have to do a single thing apart from exist.
